What is a spacer GIF?

One might first ask what is a GIF? GIF is a TLA (a real one, for a change) which stands for Graphics Interchange Format and describes a file format for storing images (ie. pictures) in a computer file. So far, so good. A spacer GIF is such a file where the content is either transparent or a colour or pattern which matches some background so as to appear transparent. This was used in web page design many years ago in order to force pixel-perfect alignment.
